Over fifty years ago, Tom Eggum was a college student who couldn't look away from the quiet suffering of children behind the Iron Curtain. He decided to do something about it, he began smuggling bibles into the Soviet Union until he was caught, arrested, and blacklisted. He continued by carrying medicine and supplies into communist China and Vietnam, speaking at churches and conferences, and leading others on life-changing mission trips.
It was at one of those trips, at a conference in Uganda, that everything changed. As Tom watched a group of children singing joyfully up front, he looked closer and saw what their smiles were hiding. Many of those children were suffering from severe skin conditions, malnourished, yet still praising God with everything they had. He went back to his room that night and fell to his knees and prayed "God, why don't You hear the prayers of these children?" He felt God answer back, "That is why you are here."
Tom returned home with the names of 100 children who needed medical care, education, a daily meal, and someone to mentor them. Those 100 became thousands. That's how Hope 4 Kids International was born; not from a strategy, but from a broken heart that God turned into a movement, and from the realization that loving a child means caring for their body, not just their soul.
The Eggum Family Medical Center is Saving Lives
The Eggum Family Medical Center sits on the H4KI campus in Tororo, Uganda. Led by a native, dedicated team of local doctors, nurses, and medical technicians, it provides compassionate, accessible care to more than 2,000 vulnerable children and families each year.
In Uganda’s Tororo District, extreme poverty puts basic healthcare out of reach. Malaria, diarrheal diseases, and pneumonia claim lives every day, not because treatments don’t exist, but because access to care does not. Families travel long distances at great personal cost, often to find the medical center has no medicine. When diagnosis and treatment are delayed, a simple illness quickly becomes life-threatening.
Eggum Family Medical Center provides preventive, emergency and acute care using diagnostic tools like x-ray, ultrasound, and a clinical lab that are rare in this remote area. It also maintains it's own on-site pharmacy and provides health education to the community.
Access to quality healthcare is more than a convenience — it is the difference between life and death.
